The Ford Explorer is a classic, almost legendary sport-utility vehicle, racking up the miles since it was first introduced way back in 1991. Customers love the car’s roomy interiors and appreciate its reliability and overall fuel efficiency. One of the Explorer’s advantages is its cargo-carrying capabilities.

In addition to ample interior space, the SUV allows owners to attach a roof rack, which comes in handy when carrying oversized gear for whatever adventures you have planned. Roof racks for the Explorer are available in many styles from various aftermarket manufacturers. It’s crucial to install your roof rack carefully and to understand the best way to distribute weight on them for safe driving and maximum efficiency.

The process of installing a roof rack on a Ford Explorer varies based on the model year, choice of trim, and the manufacturer of your roof rack. In some cases, you may have to buy a kit that includes horizontal rails and crossbars; in other instances, if your car already has the horizontal rails, you will only have to install the crossbars. (In recent models, Explorer has decided to do away with the horizontal rails.)

According to the website etrailer.com, the leading manufacturers of roof racks include Thule, Yakima, Rhino Rack, Rola, and Malone. The installation process will be a little different depending on which company made the roof rack. Follow the directions of your instruction manual carefully.

Here’s how the installation process works, using the Rhino-Rack RCP45-BK model as an example. This kit is compatible with Explorer models that already have the elevated horizontal rails.

The first step is to identify, locate and remove the thread protection caps from the inside of the rails, at the location where you intend to install the crossbars. Next, install the leg bracket onto the rubber skirt, making sure to fix the locking points of the skirt onto the leg bracket.

Step three is to install the brackets using the included hardware, and be careful not to tighten the screws beyond the maximum torque listed in the installation guide. You’re now ready to attach the crossbars and begin using your Rhino-Rack system on the Ford Explorer. In between hauls, Rhino-Rack advises that you should remove the crossbars and protect them with the included cover plates.

Once installed, you are ready to begin attaching your load for your journey.

The ABCs of Roof Racks

The roof rack allows Explorer owners to travel with oversized items such as skis or kayaks and to maximize the use of their interior space by putting luggage or other gear on the roof. The more you can carry up top, the more room there is for passengers to ride comfortably.

However, there are limits. A roof rack is one part of a larger system that includes the roof, and, if you choose, a carrier container. It’s important to know the weight ratings on each of those items, so you do not overload the system. The most weight you can support is equal to the limit of your lowest-rated item.

Here’s an example: The roof can support a maximum of 100 pounds; the rack can support 125 pounds and the carrier can support 200 pounds. Your load cannot exceed 100 pounds. Consult your owner’s manual and the users’ guides on your rack and carrier to get these amounts,

The weight capacity of Ford Explorer roofs has changed slightly over the years. The current maximum is 165 pounds without a moon roof; with a moon roof, you should keep your loads to a maximum of 75 pounds. Earlier models were capped at 100 pounds without a moon roof, and 45 pounds with the moon roof.

Staying Safe When Using the Roof Rack

Roof racks are handy items when you need them, especially when you are moving or heading out for an adventure, but it pays to be safe. Once installed, it’s important to follow a few key rules to make adjustments in how you drive the car.

The car’s center of gravity will change depending on the size of your load and how it is distributed across the roof. When using the roof rack, make sure you:

  • Pay attention to weight distribution. Maximum weight ratings are only accurate if the weight is evenly distributed across the individual crossbars.
  • Always use the crossbars. Never position a load directly on the roof panel, as it is not designed for this purpose.
  • Check your tie-downs frequently, rechecking for tightness and security at every fuel stop.
  • Allow for extra stopping distance.
  • Slow down, especially on turns.
