A power strip with a cord plugged in

With so many electronics that we use in our daily lives, finding convenient outlets can be a problem.  A cell phone, a computer, a light-too may cords to use in one place.  That’s when a power strip comes in handy.  Or is it a surge protector that you need?  The two may look alike.  Let us help clarify the difference.

What is a Power Strip?

A power strip is a way to add extra outlets when a wall outlet does not have enough room.  It is an extension cord with several outlets, allowing for a number of electronics to be powered.  Power strips are usually inexpensive and a great way to simply add a few electrical sockets.

What is a surge protector?

A surge protector is a device that is used as a power strip, but also contains protection to those items plugged into it should there be a spike or surge in electricity.  If a higher level of electricity is detected, the protector will divert the power, protecting whatever is plugged in.  The damage to electronic equipment can occur even when they are not turned on.

What is a power surge?

A power surge is an occurrence when the flow of electricity is interrupted.  When this happens, the voltage is not flowing at a constant rate.  These types of disturbances can be caused by lightning and other weather-related occurrences, a traffic accident affecting power lines or using electrical items that require a large amount of power, such as a compressor.  When you turned on a portable heater and saw the lights flicker, it was a power surge.  When a refrigerator or air conditioner in your home turns on or off, the power can fluctuate and can cause an energy spike.  You may have had a power surge and not know it.  If you return to your home and there is a clock flashing, you most likely had a power surge.

When should I use a surge protector?

Now that you know what a surge protector is, when do you need one?  Even though many power surges may be very short, over time they can lower the performance and life of your computers, televisions and major appliances.  You definitely want to utilize a surge protector with computers and televisions.  You don’t need to protect every lamp you own, but you do want to protect the larger and more expensive gadgets and appliances.

Helpful Tips

  • When purchasing either a power strip or a surge protector, be sure it has more outlets than you think you need.
  • Be sure the strip has space for larger plugs.
  • Phone and cable lines can also experience surges.  Consider a protector to include these items.
  • Keep in mind that over time, a surge protector will wear out.  Even though the power strip will continue working, the protection might be gone.  If you have experienced a big electrical event or the device is a few years old, you may want to replace it.
