How to Open the Ford Escape Trunk From the Inside
The Escape is Ford’s family-friendly small SUV. It has a nicely equipped cabin with room for up to five people and a spacious cargo area with a total of 65.4 cubic feet of space with the second row folded down. Ford makes it easy to access gear in the back with either a manual liftgate or a power liftgate you can open from the outside. If you are in your Escape and need to open the back, you can also get the liftgate open from inside. Here’s how.
Opening the Escape Trunk
While we are all used to using the manual button on the back of the liftgate or the key fob to open it, you can also open the trunk from inside the Escape. There’s a button on the driver’s side of the dashboard to the left of the steering wheel; you can tell which one it is by the image of an SUV with a lifted rear hatch. Just push this button, and the hatch will open.
The Escape Models
Ford offers the Escape in several trim levels. The base Escape S comes with 17-inch wheels and a manual liftgate. Choose the SE for keyless entry and alloy wheels, or bump up to the SEL for 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and an optional foot-operated liftgate that allows you to open the hatch just by moving your foot underneath the rear bumper. The Titanium is the top-level Escape. It has 19-inch wheels, makes the hands-free liftgate standard, and adds LED headlights.
The Power
Power for the base Escape comes from a 1.5-liter turbo three-cylinder gas engine that puts out 181 horsepower. The Titanium comes with a 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain that makes 200 horsepower, and this setup is optional for the SE ad SEL. The standard powertrain uses an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the hybrid comes with an efficient CVT.
When you need more power, Ford offers a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gas engine with 250 horsepower as an option for the SEL and Titanium models.
The Technology Features

Just a step up from the base to the SE gets you an 8-inch touch screen display, satellite radio, and Ford’s infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay, WAZE, and Android Auto, which also comes with Ford+Alexa. Standard safety technology includes a blind-spot monitor, lane-departure warning, forward collision warning with mitigation, and a rearview camera. Can I open the Ford Escape liftgate if the battery is dead?
Yes. If your Escape’s battery is drained, you can access the cargo area by folding the rear seats and manually releasing the latch from inside. The mechanical release is located behind a small panel on the interior trim near the liftgate latch.
Why will the inside liftgate button not open the hatch?
If the inside liftgate button is not responding, check that the vehicle is in Park and not moving. Also check that the liftgate disable switch in the cargo area has not been pressed.
How do I reset the power liftgate on a Ford Escape?
If the liftgate will not open or close fully, press and hold the liftgate button until it moves, stop it at your preferred height, then hold the button again until you hear a chime. This resets the programmed height.
Can I set the liftgate to open to a lower height?
Yes. Move the liftgate by hand to your preferred height, then press and hold the close button on the liftgate until it beeps. The Escape will remember that height for future openings.
How do I keep kids from opening the liftgate from inside?
