Man looking at a cell phone

Beginning October 24, 2021, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is requiring that in order to complete a call, you will need to dial ten digits-entering the three-digit area code and the seven-digit telephone number.  Even if you are dialing locally, all 10 digits will be required to make a call.

Why the Change?

You may be wondering why the change.  Starting July 16, 2022, the FCC is enacting the new three-digit number, 988, for callers to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline.  For this number to work properly, area codes that utilized a 988 working prefix will need to be changed.  The 988 was used as a local exchange, allowing for seven-digit dialing.  After the update, all phone dialing will require 10 digits.

What do You Need to do?

You will need to use 10 digits when making a call.  Along with changing your dialing habits, you may need to reprogram equipment that uses a phone number.  Some examples include a medical monitoring device, fax machine, security systems, fire alarms, gate openers and call forwarding settings.  You will also want to check your websites to make sure that area codes are included.  Your contact list on your phone may need to be updated.  Do a review of items such as checks, stationery, advertising and other contact information to make sure an area code is included.

What Happens if You Forget to Dial 10 Digits?

If you forget to dial 10 digits, your call will not go through.  You will receive a recording that your call cannot be completed as dialed.  You will need to hang up and call again…using 10 digits.

Wondering if there is anything you need to do to the programming in your vehicle?  Feel free to give Wendle Ford a call at (509) 581-5268.  Be sure to add the 509!
