Did you know that your Ford Escape can tow between 1,500 to 3,500 pounds?  The full towing capacity depends on which engine you choose and how your Escape is equipped.

Just because you aren’t driving a truck doesn’t mean you can’t tow some fun toys behind your strong and capable compact SUV.  With the lineup of Escapes offered, there is one available to pull what you need.  Read on and see how the Escape has what it takes for your next adventure.

How to Tow 3,500 Pounds

There are a few things you need to know if you want to tow the maximum 3,500 pounds in your Ford Escape.  The 2.0L EcoBoost® engine delivers the most output with 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.  When properly equipped, it can do the job.  The Class II Trailer Tow Package will provide the necessary equipment to gain the maximum towing capacity.  Included with the package is the trailer sway control feature that will automatically adjust to help control your vehicle if the system detects swaying while driving.

Towing 3,500 pounds will allow you to bring along a utility trailer, a lightweight RV or a couple of jet skis.  The max towing may vary depending on cargo and passengers.

How to Tow 1,500 to 2,000 Pounds

The standard 1.5L EcoBoost® engine, providing 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque, can tow up to 2,000 pounds.   The Escape Plug-in Hybrid with the 2.5L iVCT Atkinson-cycle hybrid engine with 165 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque can tow up to 1,500 pounds.  In order for both models to reach maximum towing capacity, the vehicles require the appropriate towing package.  As with the 2.0L EcoBoost, the max towing may vary depending on cargo and passengers.

Towing and Performance Features

The All-Wheel Drive with AWD Disconnect can stop the rear driveline when the system knows that AWD is no longer needed.  When done, only the front wheels will propel the vehicle.

An option to help keep you on the road is the selectable drive modes.  You can choose between Eco, Sport, Normal, Slippery and Deep Snow/Sand and the drive mode can modify the electronic stability control system and traction control system without having to do anything.

  • Eco mode – for efficient and responsible driving, this mode helps deliver maximum fuel efficiency.
  • Sport mode – this mode increases throttle response and provides a sportier steering feel, along with quicker shifting.
  • Normal mode – for everyday driving, this mode is a perfect balance of excitement, comfort and convenience.
  • Slippery mode – this mode is for a firm surface covered with loose or slippery material such as ice, water, grass or a thin layer of grave or sand.
  • Deep Snow/Sand mode – this mode can help keep your vehicle under control in deep snow and soft dry sand.

Cargo Room

There may be times when you don’t need to tow your equipment, but need some extra space.  The Escape comes with plenty of room with up to 37.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats.  This amount increases up to 65.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down.

If you live near the Spokane area and have questions about the equipment that a Ford Escape can tow, please give our knowledgeable staff a call or drop them a request online.  Whether it’s to Coeur d’Alene or over Snoqualmie Pass to Seattle, tell them what you want to pull and they can let you know which model can carry the load.
