The EV showdown is on!  In the battle of electric vehicles, two prominent contenders have emerged, each vying for the attention of eco-conscious buyers: the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Tesla Model Y.  The Tesla Model Y is the Mach-E‘s most direct competitor.  Our knowledgeable team at Wendle Ford of Spokane WA put together a list of highlights.  Let’s delve into some comparisons with design, technologies and performance and show you why we think Ford’s all-electric SUV is the best choice.

Exterior Design

The Ford Mustang Mach-E pays homage to the iconic Mustang lineage with the aggressive grille front.  The Tesla Model Y has more of a blunt nose.

The Mach-E is available in seven colors, with two costing extra $495 or $795.  The Tesla is available in five colors, with four of those costing an additional $1,000 or $2,000.

Interior Design

The Tesla Model Y can be equipped with a third row of seats to accommodate seven people.  But the optional third row adds $3,000 to the price, accommodating an additional two passengers.  Currently, the Mach-E has a roomier second-row seat than the Model Y in terms of shoulder and hip room, but the Model Y has more leg room.  But if the third-row seat is inserted, the legroom of the Model Y shrinks to 26.5 inches.

Performance

When you think of the Ford Mustang, you have high-performance expectations.  The Mach-E will not disappoint.

A feature worth mentioning is the MagneRide Suspension System included in the Mach-E GT Performance Edition.  The system adjusts damping response in real time based on road conditions and driving maneuvers.  Adaptive suspension is not offered on the Model Y.

Range

A notable difference when it comes to calculating the driving range  while on the road, is how the range is determined.  For the Mustang Mach-E, the range displayed behind the steering wheel will continually adjust based on the driving habits, the temperature and the terrain.  “The driving range displayed in the Model Y is an estimate of the remaining battery energy based on EPA-rated consumption.  It may not account for your personal driving patterns or external conditions.  The displayed range on the touchscreen may decrease faster than the actual distance driven.”

We consider this feature to be a significant advantage for the Mach-E.  Understanding the distance you can travel on the remaining battery charge is crucial for planning your journeys with confidence.

Charging

A standard 120-volt outlet will charge the Mach-E 3 miles of range per hour of charge with the NCM extended-range battery and 6 miles of range with the LFP standard-range battery.  The Model Y will supply two to three miles of range per hour of charge.  If you up to the 240-volt outlet, the Mach-E will charge 21 miles of range per hour and the Model Y will supply up to 30 miles of range per hour.

Now let’s talk public charging.  Ford uses the BlueOval charge network, providing access to the largest public charging network in North America.  It offers 106,000 chargers including 10,200 fast chargers.  You will find charging stations here in Spokane and over to Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene ID.  Using a fast charger with the Mach-E can increase the miles of range up to 97.9 miles (RWD) in 15 minutes, with a full charge in 45 minutes.  The Supercharger Network utilized by Tesla offers about 22,000 superchargers.  In 2024, Ford electric vehicle customers will be able to charge their EVs at Tesla Supercharger stations, utilizing a Tesla-developed adaptor.

Technology Features

If you’re not sold already that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is the EV for you, check out the technology.  One of the standout features is its compatibility with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a convenience neatly integrated within its sophisticated SYNC 4A system.  This innovation emphasizes Ford’s commitment to providing a seamless interface for its drivers.  It allows for effortless integration of a smartphone with the vehicle’s infotainment system.

The SYNC 4A is a highlight all on its own.  It boasts a large-high resolution touchscreen that serves as the command center for navigation, entertainment, communication and vehicle settings.  Due to the addition of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Mach-E drivers can access their favorite apps, music, contacts and navigation tools without the need for cords or cables.  Get a more organized and clutter-free cabin while gaining easy access to a wide range of smartphone functions.

In comparison to the Tesla Model Y, simply put, the Model Y does not offer phone integration through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto with its touchscreen.
