There are lots of things that you consider when purchasing a new vehicle.  Size, towing and technology are all included on your list.  But if you have kids, their safety might be at the top.  Let us show you how Ford has built the Escape with your family in mind.

Child Seats

Child seats can be easily installed in the Ford Escape.  The SUV comes equipped with the LATCH system-Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren.  These anchors are designed to hold the child car seat securely in place.  Your Escape comes equipped with four latches, ready to hold two car seats on each side.  The middle seat does not have the latch system.  To secure a seat in the middle, you would use the seatbelt.

For more information on how to install a car seat or a booster seat, visit NHTSA, the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Child Safety Locks

Child safety locks can be found on both rear doors of the Ford Escape.  Turning on the safety locks will prevent the ability to open the doors from the inside.  Each door must be activated separately.

Safety Canopy System Curtain

The safety canopy system curtain above the second row of the Escape is designed to protect occupants from head injuries during a crash or rollover event.  If the safety canopy is deployed, your kids in the back will have the added protection helping to reduce the risk of injuries.

Other Safety Technology for Everyone

While there is specific safety technology for your kids, the Escape has lots of safety components for all your riders.

Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking: The Pre-Collision Assist uses advanced camera technology to detect a potential collision with a vehicle or a pedestrian directly in front of yours while driving.  The system can help to reduce how bad an accident could be and might even eliminate a frontal collision.  If a possible collision is detected, an alert goes off and a warning message appears in the message center.  If you don’t react quickly enough, then the Automatic Emergency Braking will pre-charge the brakes to provide full responsiveness when you do brake.  If you don’t fix the problem in time and a collision is going to happen, brakes can apply automatically.  (Driver-assist features are supplemental and do not replace the driver’s attention, judgment and need to control the vehicle.  It does not replace safe driving.  See Owner’s Manual for details and limitations.)

Blind Spot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert:  The BLIS can alert you when a vehicle is detected driving next to you in a blind spot.  Radar sensors are located on each side of the car, near the rear.  When the system detects a vehicle, an indicator light will come on in the side-view mirror.  The Cross-Traffic Alert will flash an alert in the side-view mirrors and an audible warning when you are backing up and traffic is behind you.

Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control:  The feature works just like a normal cruise control, but offers a few extras.  Intelligent Cruise Control features Speed Sign Recognition and Lane Centering.  Speed Sign Recognition reads the speed limit sign and communicates with the Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control system to adjust the speed of the vehicle.  The Lane Centering system uses an onboard camera to detect painted road lines and provides continuous steering assistance to help you keep your vehicle within its lane while driving.  You can preset a gap follow distance.  If a vehicle is detected on front of you, the gap setting uses the front camera and radar technology to scan for slower vehicles in front of you and automatically adjusts your speed to maintain the preset gap between.  Once the traffic speeds up, you’ll return to the speed and gap distance you preset.  Then you’ve got the Stop-and-Go to help your driving on the highway in heavy traffic conditions.  Once you’ve set a preset follow gap distance, if the vehicle ahead of you comes to a stop, your vehicle can also follow down to a stop.  When the lead vehicle begins moving within a short period of about three seconds, your vehicle will automatically begin to follow.
