Sitting along the banks of the 30 mile stretch of stunning Lake Coeur d’Alene, the town of Coeur d’Alene, ID boasts lush forests and mountains, sparkling waters, and spectacular views. You can experience all these sights from the freedom of your bicycle. This little Idaho town is a biker’s dream with 407 miles of trail to explore and endless ways to immerse yourself in the landscape. The following recommendations are for those who love the brain-body connection of cycling and want to go to places a car simply can’t reach. Your next adventure is just around the corner!

Recommended Routes

The Coeur d’Alene area offers biking trails for every level of experience, though most are for the more experienced biker. These are just a few that come highly recommended for the adventurous spirit.

Beauty Bay Loop

Located just outside of Coeur d’Alene, one of the more intermediate/difficult level trails is the primitive Beauty Bay Loop. This 19.8 miles stretch takes you through forests of thick tree cover and potential moose sightings! The route is mostly obstacle free, though the initial climb is challenging and there is a brief section toward the end that includes a double creek crossing. It is best to use your mobile app to find and stay on the descent path but, once you’re on it, the path is nice and flowing. While there is little traffic, the trail uses an old road and dogs are allowed off leash so you’ll want to keep your eyes open. Beauty Bay Loop closes down for snow and downfall in the winter, but if you’re looking for a test of your skills this summer this is a great option.

Independence Creek Tour

The Independence Creek Tour is a 5-star ride in backcountry along a river with spectacular views from the ridge. This  21.2 mile trek is a grand adventure for mountain bikers that takes you through the beautiful northern Idaho scenery. With an elevation gain of approximately 2,100 feet, this journey is labeled difficult and you should expect to get a workout with some hike-a-bike to get to the top. You should also expect to get wet as there are 14 stream crossings along the creek. Though the ride is difficult, the scenery has kept its pristine character despite a fire in 1910 and will give you a treat for the eyes as you travel. You won’t regret taking on this trek through the historical Independence Creek trail, once home to logging camps, homesteaders, and the forest service.

Bernard Peak Loop

Listed as an A++ ride, the Bernard Peak Loop is open all year, non-motorized, and includes a variety of terrains. On this intermediate trail, you’ll get stunning views of Lake Pend Oreille and the surrounding backcountry. You can even stop for a brief visit to the towns of Bayview or Athol for lunch along the way. This 18 mile track comes complete with switchbacks, creek crossings, speed, swoops, and turns. It is not for the faint of heart but, with caution, is an opportunity for adrenaline-inducing fun.

Best Trails Near Coeur d’Alene

We would be remiss if we didn’t tell you some of what are considered the best trails for biking in the Coeur d’Alene area. The following are some with the best ratings for single track trails.

Blue Creek Trail

Accessible year round, the simple level Blue Creek Trail will allow a plethora of activities and views. Great for kids and dogs alike, the 574-feet elevation gain should give you no problems and even give you a bit of a challenge as you begin, just to keep things interesting. The 2.6 mile loop sees a moderate amount of traffic and you will want to look into how muddy the path is before you go, but it is worth a peek if you have the time.

Trail 8

Trail 8 is listed as intermediate but is relatively smooth and rut-free, great for experienced and new riders alike. While this trail is only a couple miles on its own, it can easily be combined with the Penn and Cave Trails to make a 3.8 miles loop with a 941-foot elevation gain. As you might expect within the Idaho Panhandle National Forest, the views are spectacular and the trail flattens out a bit in the middle so you can take some time to enjoy the scenery. It’s the perfect route for families to enjoy but get to the park early in the spring as it is heavily used by both hikers and bikers. And don’t forget your map. There are several trail offshoots and they have been found to be poorly marked occasionally. But don’t let that stop you! This is sure to be a great ride.

West Canfield Butte via Trail 1

Coming in at 4.5 stars, this trail is appropriately labeled difficult. It has a whopping 2,668-foot elevation gain, basically a climb the whole way, and is certainly one of the hardest short trails in the area. It is a 3.8 mile, out-and-back, trail that will definitely work your muscles and your determination. But the view of gorgeous Lake Coeur d’Alene from the top will make it all worth it. You’ll want to watch out for dogs and dirt bikers, but those other bikers have created alternative trails for you to explore on your way up or down.
